How to Stand Out on YouTube without Following the Niche Map
Beyond the artificial scarcity of frameworks lies a voice that cannot be duplicated.
In the year , a man named Lansford Hastings wrote a book. The book was called “The Emigrants’ Guide to Oregon and California.” He had never seen the land he described but he wrote about it with great force.
He told the travelers to take a shortcut across the Great Salt Lake Desert. He said the path was easy and he said it would save them many weeks. A group of people called the Donner Party read the book and they believed the words.
They took the shortcut and they found only salt and mud and death. The advice was a commodity and the commodity was a lie. The path was crowded with those who wanted a faster way and the faster way destroyed them.
The Spreadsheet of Identical Faces
Ida sits in her chair and she looks at a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet has three columns and the columns are labeled Passion and Profit and Competition. She has been told to find the place where these things meet.
The “Sweet Spot” framework often leads to a crowded center rather than a unique edge.
She types her ideas into a tool and the tool gives her a score. The score is high for “Budget Meal Prep for Students.” Ida feels a spark of hope and she opens a new tab. She types the words into the search bar and the screen fills with rows of faces.
There are hundreds of people in the rows and they all look the same. They all wear the same cotton aprons and they all use the same bright yellow text in their thumbnails. They are all standing in the middle of the Great Salt Lake Desert and they are all holding the same guidebook.
Grit Between the Keys
I am a librarian in a prison. I have spent the morning cleaning coffee grounds from my keyboard. A man knocked over his cup and the grounds went between the keys. The grounds were wet and they smelled like old earth.
I had to pry the keys off one by one and I had to use a small brush to find the grit. It was a slow task and it was a messy task. I look at the books on the shelves and I see the same thing that Ida sees.
The inmates want the books on how to get rich. They want the books on how to build a brand. These books are the most popular and the spines are broken from so many hands. Every man in the yard is reading the same three books and every man is planning the same business. They are learning to be identical and they think they are learning to be free.
The advice to “find a niche” is a good rule but it is a rule that has been sold too many times. When a thousand people follow the same framework they all arrive at the same destination. The framework is a machine and the machine produces copies.
The machine asks you what you like and it asks you what people buy. It tells you to find the “gap” in the market. But the gap is a mirage and the mirage is full of people.
The machine only knows what has already happened and it only knows what everyone else is doing.
The Invisible Perfection
She followed the instructions and she made a video. She used the keywords that the tool told her to use. She used the lighting that the tutorial told her to use. She spoke with the energy that the coach told her to use.
The video was perfect and the video was invisible. It was invisible because it looked like every other video in the student meal niche. It was a grain of sand on a beach and no one noticed the shape of the grain. She had optimized herself into a corner and the corner was crowded.
The Translation Trap
The problem with the German YouTube market is the same problem as the desert in . The market is smaller and the paths are narrower. Creators look at what works in America and they translate it into German.
They take the framework and they apply it to a new language. This works for a short time and then it stops working. It stops working because ten other people had the same idea on the same day.
They all read the same blog posts and they all watched the same webinars. They are all competing for the same few eyes and they are all using the same tricks.
I put the keys back on my keyboard. The space bar clicked and the shift key was smooth. The mess was gone but the smell of the coffee remained. I thought about the books that no one borrows.
There is a book about the history of salt and there is a book about the life of a bee. These books sit on the shelf and the covers are clean. No one in the yard wants to talk about salt or bees. They want to talk about “dominating the market.”
But the man who reads about the salt knows something that the others do not know. He has an edge and the edge is his own. He is not a copy and he is not a commodity.
Finding the Light
If you want to stand out you must go where the framework tells you not to go. The framework tells you to be “relatable” but you should be strange. The framework tells you to be “professional” but you should be raw.
It is a room that is already full of people and the air is stale. You must find the room that is empty and you must turn on the light yourself.
Real distinctiveness lives in the un-optimized corners of your mind. It lives in the things you are afraid to say because the “experts” told you they would not perform well.
The algorithm is a mirror and the mirror reflects the crowd. If you want to break the mirror you must show it something it has never seen. You must stop trying to win the game that everyone else is playing and you must start a new game.
The rules of the old game are meant to keep you in line and they are meant to make you predictable.
A New Ingredient
Ida closes her spreadsheet. She deletes the columns and she shuts the laptop. She goes to her kitchen and she looks at the ingredients on the counter. She does not think about the students and she does not think about the budget.
She thinks about the meal her grandmother made in the small village. She thinks about the way the onions smelled and she thinks about the way the old wooden spoon felt in her hand. She decides to make a video about that feeling.
She does not use the yellow font and she does not use the high energy. She talks to the camera as if she is talking to a ghost.
The video is slow and the video is quiet. It does not fit the framework and the keywords are “wrong.” But people watch it and they feel something. They feel it because it is real and they feel it because it is not a copy.
When you finally find that voice you need to make sure people can hear it. You need to build a foundation so the world takes notice. You might choose to
to give your unique vision the social proof it deserves in a crowded market.
The numbers are a signal and the signal tells the crowd that something different is happening here.
The Hunger for the Mess
The German audience is tired of the same faces and the same scripts. They are hungry for something that has not been optimized for a spreadsheet. They want the truth and they want the mess.
They want the coffee grounds between the keys. They want to see the person behind the brand and they want to know that the person is not a machine.
The framework is a cage and the door is open. You only have to walk through it and you only have to leave the guidebook behind.
The Life Beyond Statistics
Silas survived the desert but he was a changed man. He never read another guidebook and he never looked for a shortcut again. He learned that the long way is often the only way and he learned that the crowd is usually wrong.
“The long way is often the only way.”
He built a house and he planted a garden. He did not find gold but he found a life that was his own. He was not a copy of an emigrant and he was not a statistic in a book. He was just Silas and that was enough.
The map that promises the gold is the same paper that leads every traveler to the same empty river.
You can buy the tools and you can buy the growth but you cannot buy the soul of the work. You must bring that yourself. You must be willing to be the only person in the room who is doing it “wrong.”
When you do it wrong for a long time people start to call it “right.” They start to write new guidebooks about you and they start to build new frameworks based on your success. Then a new group of people will follow those books and they will become generic.
The cycle will continue and the only way to win is to refuse to join the circle. Stand in the corner and speak your truth and wait for the world to find you. It is a lonely path but the air is fresh and the view is your own.
